The Te Huruhi Way

Our philosophy, The Te Huruhi Way, supports of understanding of how we learn and behave.

Our School:

  • Is one where people are courteous and considerate
  • Is one where people talk with, not at each other
  • Is one where children are taught to do quality work
  • Has reasonable rules which everyone agrees on because they are beneficial to the individual and the group
  • Teaches self-responsibility and self-evaluation
  • Is an inclusive environment where each child has opportunity to develop to their potential

‘The Te Huruhi Way’ describes how our learning community chooses to implement and teach this philosophy. The aim is to be consistent and effective throughout the school by delivering a message that is clear, concise and easily understood. ‘The Te Huruhi Way’ is underpinned by five core values.

The Five Cs are: Caring, Co-operation, Courtesy, Courage and Commitment.

These shared values are introduced at the beginning of the school year and are promoted, taught and reviewed during the year. They are also the basis of ethical professional relationships within our school and with the wider community.  Woven through each of these five values is an understanding of the consequences of individual choice.

Te Huruhi School is a CARING place, so feel safe.

Have COURAGE to learn new things, and do what you know is right.
Be COMMITTED to doing your best.
      Be COURTEOUS.  CO-OPERATE with others.
Make good CHOICES and enjoy your achievements.

Detailed information about our School Philosophy is available from The Principal or Deputy Principals.

      What is Taught

Ours is a state school governed by the Ministry of Education and our school Board of Trustees. We follow the official New Zealand curriculum with classroom programmes designed to assist our local children. Each year our staff focuses on particular curriculum areas with extensive professional development. In this manner, our teaching and curriculum remains up to date.

      School Charter

The school charter is comprised of our core values, strategic plan for the next three years and our annual plan. A copy of the charter is available from the school office on request or click here to view online.

      Garden to Table Programme

The Garden to Table programme is changing the way children approach and think about food. All around the country, we want to see children enthusiastically getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food.

      TravelWise Programme

To help reduce congestion outside of school, encourage more students to walk, cycle, scoot or bus to school, and deliver a safer road environment for our children and community.

Te Huruhi is the proud recipient of a Silver Enviro-School award and are now working hard towards our next achievement - a Green Gold.
